52 Weeks of Floor Plans...Week 1!

Welcome!

Every week for the next year, I will be posting an original floor plan and designs that reflect my belief in simple living.

I've been toying with the idea of buying land and building a small cottage, or starter home, that I can use one day as a studio or guest house. I've found a few inspirational images from Houzz and Pinterest that really fuel the designs, and I hope you enjoy!

Week 1!

Although I've been working on a design for a compact space for a while, the image below truly kick-started my "cottage crush."

I love the idea of a small home, on a nice piece of land, and really appreciating the outdoors. As an avid hiker and kayaker, I've been discovering what nature can provide and with this realization, I find that homes do not need to be enormous, but only well designed.

Below is a simple design that I believe holds true to this idea of simplicity & function.

As one who likes to entertain, a great room is a must - with a warm fireplace and a well equipped kitchen (required for me since cooking fresh meals is an addiction of mine.) I love the planks of wood on this island below! Rustic, Industrial, Modern -- great design.

The furniture would be very versatile, and function well for living, and entertaining. Daybed/ open couches would work great for exposure on one side to the fireplace, and conversing with other seating areas. Also would work as sleeping space for guests.

As a minimalist, a small bedroom with the essentials will suffice (large windows for lots of natural light, natural wood accents, bookcase, and maybe a small flat panel TV.) The space would be decorated with gold/ red paisley sheets, a warm down comforter, and a complimentary rug. Below is a collaboration of my favorite pieces I've found so far.

The walk in closet will house the laundry unit (like the one below), and act as a bridge between the bedroom and the bathroom.

Last few weeks to Kayak @ Rickett's Glen!

One of my favorite places to visit in the area is Rickett's Glen State Park, and especially the Sunny Side Marina on Lake Jean where I rent kayaks throughout the summer. (The family who owns the business is wonderful and always a pleasure to talk to!) Lake Jean has amazing views, and if you are lucky, you will spot the bald eagle flying around the sky as you explore the water. I was lucky enough last summer to witness the amazing sight - 20 feet in front of me, the eagle flew down and grabbed a fish from the lake and soared back into the sky. It was beautiful and a day I will never forget. The lake even has an island that you can park your kayak at and get out and walk around. 52 Weeks of Floor Plans --- Week 21!

Week 21! I have a cozy bedroom now, and love its quaint size, so I stemmed this weeks design with the simplicity of the room. The only change I would make to my current space would be to switch the window wall (I only sleep on my right side, so I would love it if the sunrise would be conveniently positioned to wake me in the morning. I love this wall color and the retro couch. And I'm a sucker for orange/ peach roses. Source A clean color scheme with eclectic accents for the kitchen. Source This deep blue with white trim and light wood are very serene and relaxing (and there is a chevron blanket which makes me like this space even more!) Source Chevron! 52 Weeks of Floor Plans --- Week 24!

This week, I traveled to the Christkindl market in Mifflinburg, PA. I highly recommend taking the trip - great crafts and amazing food! Even some entertainment! The best part was exploring a cute town with historical houses with amazing features. Beautiful exterior of a local log home. One of the shops was inside a beautiful old home, which had an amazing fireplace. It was large enough to walk into the space, and even included doors to keep it concealed when not in use. Motivated me to design a plan with the intention of fireplaces just like these! Inspiration for this week's design - amazing original fireplaces with doors to hide the hearth. Source Source Source
