52 Weeks of Floor Plans ---Week 12!

...Dream Drafting...

That is what I'm going to start calling my designs that come to me in dreams.  This one is especially special since it's from over a decade ago, and I still remember the design, yet this is the first time I've put it on paper (or computer.)  The reason I remember it so well?  In my dream, my grandfather was standing on the walkway on the 2nd floor.  My grandfather worked in construction, and loved architecture.   I feel like he and I would have been super close, yet never had the chance to know one another since he passed away while I was a baby.  (Lucky enough, I was born on his birthday, and am told I have his nose.)
He was quite handsome and if you ask me, looked like Elvis.

I like to think that since we missed out on talking about buildings and design, he visits me in my dreams, and shares his design ideas with me.

In my dream, the house was more modern, but sorry Grandpa, your granddaughter is too much of a country girl.  I imagine the space like a Tuscan home (oddly enough- his mother, my great grandmother, was Italian) stone facade & some concrete.  I like the idea of rustic flooring, colorful shutters on the exterior, and an amazing garden outside.

...hey Debbie what do you think?

Loving this green!

I would want a large fireplace in between the dining and living spaces, with 2 chairs facing the fire. Wooded beams would be used in the dining and kitchen for extra support of the 2nd floor.

Wood Columns
Open floor with beams. I am totally in love! although I can see my son slamming into these all the time!

I made the stairwell rounded, with a unique design for a castle, ancient feel.

The laundry space I hid behind a bookcase which could also allow for access to a basement or as a wine cellar.  I didn't want this space to be useless, so why not a secret doorway.

The kitchen is a large space, with an enormous island for prepping.  A rustic feel, and side exit to access a vegetable garden.  The little nook by the entry way would house hooks for coats.  The table in the dining room - simple wood planks and equally simple seating.

I love pairing benches with a farmhouse table. The pale blue grey and natural tones are pretty with the warm wood finishes... great color

52 Weeks of Floor Plans --- Week 21!

Week 21! I have a cozy bedroom now, and love its quaint size, so I stemmed this weeks design with the simplicity of the room.  The only change I would make to my current space would be to switch the window wall (I only sleep on my right side, so I would love it if the sunrise would be conveniently positioned to wake me in the morning.  I love this wall color and the retro couch.  And I'm a sucker for orange/ peach roses.   Source A clean color scheme with eclectic accents for the kitchen. Source This deep blue with white trim and light wood are very serene and relaxing (and there is a chevron blanket which makes me like this space even more!)  Source Chevron! Source I would love a walk in closet, even if a small one.  Source Simple and clean counters, dark cabinetry. Source Walk in shower with glass tile & a simple bench. Source Small but beautiful powder room. Source

52 Weeks of Floor Plans - Week 3!

Welcome! Every week for the next year, I will be posting an original floor plan and designs that reflect my belief in simple living.   I've been toying with the idea of buying land and building a small cottage, or starter home, that I can use one day as a studio or guest house.  I've found a few inspirational images from Houzz and Pinterest that really fuel the designs, and I hope you enjoy!   Week 3! When I was in grad school, I had an assignment where I had to create a 120 sq ft dwelling for a client with " the fear of being inside a house."  Easy right?  The best solution - a glass house.  I used Phillip Johnson's Glass House as inspiration. Source The kitchen had to be super small, yet not cut off the space from light. This limited the ability to place cabinets and appliances against the wall, but this little kitchenette provide the best option for flexibility (and a dishwasher!)   Source And another option! ...

Traveling & Life

My last post for my 52 weeks of floor plans conveniently coincided with a vacation I'd been anticipating all year.  I took 10 days off work - something I rarely do!  July 2nd I went on an adventure down south to places I had never been, with people I had never met but have long connections with!  I saw amazing views along the way... Somewhere in North Carolina.... I was able to cross "The Biltmore Estate" off my bucket list & visited Asheville, NC.  And my cousin's corny joke, "It's a little small....they could have built more" We then continued to South Carolina for a family reunion on the 4th!  And finally, my favorite part of the trip, the Smokey Mountains.  (Cosby, Tennessee) We stayed at a secluded log cabin on the top of a mountain with our own private road and 35 acres with trails on the property.   I sadly saw no bears, but heard them in the woods around us in the early hours of the morning.  I spent m...
